
10 tips for building an emergency plan
- If you have electrically-powered medical equipment, ask your physician, nurse or equipment provider about an emergency plan before an outage occurs.
- Have at least a three-day supply of food, water and medication on hand.
- Stock enough supplies for infants and pets.
- Store first aid kits in your home and in your car.
- Keep flashlights, a portable radio and plenty of fresh batteries handy.
- Make sure family members know how to get in touch with each other during an emergency.
- Store emergency contacts in your mobile phone.
- Know where your cell phone charger is.
- Hire a licensed electrician to install a transfer switch for your generators. See our Generator Safety brochure for additional tips.
- Keep cash on hand in case ATMs and credit card machines are not working.
